Excitement is in the air here at CSSB as our move into the new building draws nearer. This year we not only welcomed the FZB as a new partner institute but we also agreed upon our overall operating concept and established a new research strategy. INAUGURAL REPORT

"We are taking off" is the title of the new CSSB inagural report published this September. The report highlights CSSB’s beginnings and future aspirations and also gives an in-depth description of the research being carried out by our group leaders. FZB JOINS CSSB

On 16 June, Research Center Borstel (FZB) joined the CSSB partnership in the hunt for the pathogens that cause infectious diseases. In a small ceremony by the Elbe River in Hamburg, Matthias Wilmanns, CSSB Scientific Director, Dirk Heinz, CSSB Council Chair, and Stefan Ehlers, Director of FZB, signed an associate partnership contract.

NEW MEMBER FOR RESEARCH HOTEL

Dr. Rainer Kaufmann is one of thirteen scientists to receive a Freigeist-Fellowship from the Volkswagen Foundation and will conduct his research in the CSSB Research Hotel in 2017.

SAB MEETING

From September 7-8, members of the CSSB Directorate and Scientific Advisory Board met at EMBL Hamburg on the DESY Campus for their annual meeting. In addition to discussing the scientific progress made by CSSB in the past year, SAB members took a tour of the CSSB building.

CSSB HOSTS UNI LUND DELEGATION

On 15 September CSSB hosted a delegation from Lund University's Medical Faculty. After a series of presentations and informal talks the group toured the new CSSB building and the PETRA III beamlines.

19 October 2016
ECV SCIENTIFIC TOUR

On 19 October, prior to the start of the European Congress of Virology participants will have the opportunity visited different research institutes here in Hamburg. All three of the scientific tours offered ended at the CSSB building. A short presentation regarding CSSB and our research was given and visitors had the opportunity to speak with several CSSB scientists while enjoying a light snack.

8 November 2016
ANTIBIOTICS - BLUNT WEAPONS?

Come join us for a panel discussion, entitled "Antibiotics - blunt weapons?" The podium discussion is sponsored by CSSB and the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg and will take place on 8 November at 19:00 in the Lichthof of the Altbau der Staats-und-Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg.

Invited speakers include Professor Petra Dersch, Dr. Werner Lanthaler, Professor Ansgar Lohse and Professor Thomas Marlovits. A welcome address will be given by Professor Edwin J. Kreuzer and the discussion will be moderated by scientific journalist Angela Grosse. The panel discussion will take place in German.

  CSSB Building Update
 

 

LAB BENCHES INSTALLED

The construction of the CSSB building is progressing rapidly. Laboratory benches have been installed in most of the CSSB labs. The floor for the Science Bridge has also been installed and work on the terrace has now begun. Workers will soon begin laying the carpeting and laminate flooring. CSSB scientists are looking forward to moving into the building in April 2017.

CAPTURING A NEW CONFORMATION

Using electron cryo-tomography, the team of CSSB group leader, Kay Grünewald and their collaborators from London were able to capture images of the gB protein in its native membrane context and discovered a hitherto elusive conformation of the glycoprotein which opens up opportunities for the development of novel interventions.
