Welcome to the first issue of the CSSB Newsletter, CSSB Connect. This quarterly newsletter will keep you informed regarding the latest scientific news and upcoming events here at CSSB.

2015 is off to an exciting start for us here in Hamburg! We are looking forward to welcoming over 120 guests to our first International Symposium at the beginning of April. The symposium will be followed by our Spring School which will offer courses in sample preparation and analysis, advanced microscopy, and more.

ACHIEVING ATOMIC ACCURACY

CSSB group leader, Thomas Marlovits, published a new method for achieving atomic accurate models from cryo-EM data in the peer reviewed journal Nature Methods. “Our protocol generates a clear and accurate atomic structure which places atoms in their precise position even if the original data from the cryo-electron microscopy maps is of a lower resolution” explains Marlovits.

In a preview interview, symposium speaker and Director of the Max Planck Institute of Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen, Patrick Cramer discusses some of his recent research on transcription initiation and gives his thoughts regarding how structural and systems biology might impact infection research.

CSSB WELCOMES SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN

An accession agreement, signed in December 2014, established Schleswig-Holstein as the fourth official investment partner of the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB). Schleswig-Holstein will be supporting the CSSB with a two million euro contribution towards the construction of its state-of-the-art research institute.

CSSB PUBLIC RELATIONS MEETING

On February 26, public relations representatives from CSSB’s partner organizations convened in Hamburg to discuss cooperation and collaboration opportunities. “Our lively discussions led to many new insights and fresh ideas for CSSB public relations.” explains Melissa Prass, CSSB Public Relations Officer. The meeting was followed by a tour of the DESY campus which included a visit to the PETRA III hall and a look at the new X-FEL tunnel.

MICHAEL KOLBE NEW CSSB PROFESSOR

In February 2015, Michael Kolb accepted a joint appointment by the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig and the University of Hamburg to become a W3 professor at the CSSB. He and his team are studying the molecular mechanisms used by gram-negative bacteria, such as Shigella or Salmonella, to manipulate host cells.

9-11 April 2015
1st CSSB INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

The 1st CSSB International Symposium "Systems in Infection Biology - From Molecules to Organisms" will be held from April 9 - 11, 2015. The research focus will be on state-of-the-art systems biology approaches, embedded into complementary research directions such as structural biology and infection biology. The symposium is supported by the Joachim Herz Foundation and will be held at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine.

13-17 April 2015
CSSB SPRING SCHOOL

The CSSB Spring School 2015 "From Molecules to Organisms: Approaches for Structural Systems Biology" (organised by Joachim Herz Stiftung and CSSB) will be held on the DESY campus, Hamburg from 13 - 17 April 2015. The School will provide an introduction to advanced biophysical approaches for structural systems biology.

BIOSTRUCT-X INDUSTIRAL WORKSHOP

BioStruct-X Industrial workshop will be held in Hamburg on the DESY campus from 15-17 June. The aim of the workshop is to discuss industrial applications of synchrotron radiation in biological research.

FEMTO12

The 12th Femtochemistry Conference (FEMTO12) - Frontiers of ultrafast phenomena in Chemistry, Biology, and Physics - will take place in Hamburg, Germany. FEMTO12 will bring together scientists from all over the world to present and discuss the most recent advances in femtosciences.

  CSSB Building Update
 

 

1st AND 2nd FLOORS BEING BUILT

Given the mild winter here in Hamburg, the construction of the CSSB building is on schedule. The construction team is now building the first and second floors. “Now walking around the site, you have a great sense of how the rooms will feel in the completed building.” explains construction manager, Verena Börschmann.
