CSSB Welcomes Schleswig-Holstein as an Additional Partner State

| News

An accession agreement, signed in December 2014, established Schleswig-Holstein as the fourth official investment partner of the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) located on the DESY campus in Hamburg. Schleswig-Holstein will be supporting the CSSB with a two million euro contribution towards the construction of its state-of-the-art research institute. Schleswig-Holstein joins present investment partners; the German federal government (36.5 million), the city of Hamburg (8.5 million), and the state of Lower Saxony (5 million) for a combined total investment of 52 million euros. The CSSB is already in contact with potential research partners from Schleswig-Holstein namely, the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel (CAU) and Forschungszentrum Borstel. “Schleswig-Holstein joining CSSB is very exciting for us. It is logical for our closest neighbor to align with our ambition to establish a leading research centre in Northern Germany, which focuses on timely topics in biomedical research and will use the leading research infrastructures on the DESY campus”, says Matthias Wilmanns, CSSB’s founding research director.

The CSSB building, to be completed in 2017, is situated in the heart of the DESY campus to allow for easy access to existing and future X–ray sources. The modern, three-floor building will house both laboratory and office space for its research groups as well as a 150 seat lecture hall. CSSB research extends beyond disciplines by combining the latest technology and methodology in structural, systems and infection biology to develop an in-depth understanding of bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens and their interactions with their host, the human body.
