Happy International Women’s Day
CSSB is celebrating International Women's Day 2024 by participating in the Inspire Inclusion social media campaign. At CSSB, one of our core values is to “actively create an inclusive and diverse community that fosters creativity, drives innovation, and encourages new perspectives.”
The Fireside Chats events organized by CSSB’s Diversity Committee provide a platform for scientists from all backgrounds to share their personal experiences in an interactive and informal way. The fireside chats often highlight the experiences of female scientists and will continue next week on March 13 with CSSB Group leader Meytal Landau. “Each breakthrough in my scientific career is not just academic – it’s personal. Science is both my pillar and my passion,” notes Meytal.
In an interview earlier this week, CSSB’s newest group leader Caroline Barisch also gave some great advice for women looking to begin their career in biology:
“For International Women's Day, I would like to give the following advice: First, finding strong mentors is crucial. A good mentor can provide not only guidance and knowledge but also support and encouragement. Second, it's important to recognize and leave environments that are not supportive or even toxic. Your professional growth and well-being should always be a priority, and a toxic environment can hinder both. Lastly, I highly recommend seeking out and engaging with networks of women in our field. For instance, I have joined Infect-Net (www.infectnet.org) the Association of German Women working in Infectious Disease Research.”
