Deadly Electrical Accident in the CSSB Building

Yesterday around 16h, a serious electrical accident occurred in the Centre for Structural System Biology’s building. A contracted worker suffered an electrical shock while working in the building’s basement.

The police and fire departments as well as emergency medical services were notified immediately. After receiving emergency medical treatment, the worker was brought via ambulance to the hospital where shortly thereafter he regrettably passed away. The Department of Labour Protection is currently investigating the detailed circumstances and the exact course of events regarding this accident.

Prof. Matthias Wilmanns, CSSB Scientific Director, states: “We are deeply moved by this tragic accident. Our sympathies are with the family and friends of the deceased worker.”

“We are profoundly shaken and our sympathies go to the family and friends of the unfortunate worker,” explains Christian Harringa, Deputy Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors “We will fully support the responsible authorities in establishing a detailed clarification of this incident.”
