Prof. Chris Meier Appointed New Scientific Director of CSSB

| News

The Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) will be under new scientific management as of 2018: Prof. Dr. Chris Meier from the Department of Chemistry at Universität Hamburg takes over from Prof. Dr. Matthias Wilmanns from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). On 25 October 2017, the CSSB Council elected Prof. Meier as the new scientific director. The 55-year-old will lead the CSSB for two years and then advise the centre as a “post-director”. Previously, he worked with Prof. Dr. Thomas Marlovits from the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) as CSSB deputy scientific director and as speaker of the CSSB task force.

Since the grand opening in June 2017, scientists from different research institutions have been collaborating across multiple disciplines at CSSB. Their common goal is to better understand the structure, dynamics and mechanisms of infection processes. Their findings will contribute to the development of new treatment methods.

“CSSB is a unique research centre that combines structural and system biology. Thanks to our combined expertise and our excellent equipment, we have an unprecedented opportunity and at the same time an obligation to contribute to the understanding and control of diseases like malaria or herpes infections”, explains Prof. Meier. “I look forward to this new task and to further strengthening the existing collaborations with colleagues and CSSB partner institutions. I am delighted to contribute to the establishment of high-level research at CSSB.”
