Abstract
Antibiotics have been rightly called the Fire Extinguishers of Medicine but the current pipeline is thin and antibacterial resistance continues to grow. Despite their pivotal role in enabling our healthcare infrastructure, developing new antibacterial agents is strikingly difficult and recent products have collapsed into bankruptcy after approval! To provide insight into these events and how the R&D community needs to focus antibacterial R&D going forward, this talk will examine both key R&D issues (in particular, the distinctive requirement to use non-inferiority trial designs) as well as causes and solutions of the economic market failure of antibiotics.
